  • The Baby Is the Lesson

I don't have a baby, so don't freak out.  I'm just thinking about something that was posted on our homeschool group email loop a while back.  It is tempting to push through NO MATTER WHAT to get school work or chores done, but it is more important to shepherd the kids' hearts.  I've been trying to remind myself of this for the last week or so.  So, it may sound strange, but I sometimes walk around the house saying to myself, "The baby is the lesson, the baby is the lesson...."  I don't remember who posted this, but thanks!

Okay, now I really do need to get back to the kids' lessons.

  • Bible Connection Much Better than the Rainbow Connection, Sorry Kermit

We were very excited that our Old Testament study during our school time has gone well with our study of Matthew.  It has been slow going, but that's okay.  We only listen to a few minutes of a sermon on Matthew at a time, but we're learning a lot.

Well this morning and last week, our pastor has been preaching on Jesus' teaching in Matthew 5 about loving our enemies.  He has been preaching through the imprecatory psalms and has taken a few weeks to show how we should understand psalms that curse God's enemies when Jesus says to love our enemies.  It has been heavy stuff, but very good to learn.

So, we've been coming around to the book of Matthew a lot lately.

  • Trick-or-Treat

What is Builder going to be for trick-or-treating?!?!?  Ahhhh....

Curly is going to be a dwarf.  It is really cute when she pulls her hair around to the front of her face to make a beard.

My sister is coming to visit for trick-or-treating!!  We are counting down the days.

  • Jesus, Jesus, Jesus...There's Just Something about That Name

While the kids are busy on their own project, I just have to share something from our Bible lesson.  It was such an encouragement to me.

I used to struggle with the sound of the name Jesus because so many tv evangelists say His name in such a way that makes you think of slimy used car salesmen.  Today's lesson was a great reminder of the greatness of His name.

In our lesson we learned that the name Jesus means "The Lord is Salvation."  What's in a name?  Would a rose by any other name smell as sweet?  In this case, so much truth is packed into Jesus' name.  He is the Lord and He is salvation.  That's worth pondering.

We also were reminded of the Hebrew pronunciation, Yeshua, which I love.

So...better get back to work, but I wanted to share this little tidbit.  It makes that Gaither song "There's Just Something About that Name" mean so much more.

BTW  maybe someone could write a song using the Hebrew pronunciation....Yeshua would sound so pretty in a song.

  • Wow, Seven Extra Minutes

I actually have 7 minutes to myself before we start our next activity.  I'll try to squeeze in an update.

Curly has started ballet classes and she loves it!  I am so proud of her attitude.  She has matured so much since she started taking karate a few years ago.  She now has no trouble concentrating for an entire hour and she has great balance.  It is amazing to see her growth.

Her dance instructor is a character.  She is old-school, no nonsense.  It was a little startling to Curly at first, but thankfully we were warned by the friend who recommended this dance studio.  I tried to encourage Curly that it is all part of the experience.  She is taking on the challenge like a champ and knows that when this teacher compliments her, she really means it.

It reminds me of my experience in a New York deli as a teenager.  My friend and I, southern girls who tended to take our time, were so excited to soak up the fast paced life of the city.  We went to the coolest little deli for lunch and wanted to look over the whole menu before deciding.  The line started to back up behind us so the guy behind the counter yelled at us to hurry up.  It was so great!  It was so part of the whole busy New York rush that we cracked up and enjoyed our lunch thoroughly.

Okay my 7 minutes are up.

Let's see...what's happening with Builder...he has done a smashing job with his grammar and writing class.  He can write from a key-word outline like nobody's business.

    Better go...

  • Confessions of a Sick Mommy

Well I yelled at my husband this morning for not being more sympathetic.  I am coveting my child's amoxicillin.  I can't think straight.  And the thing that really has me convinced that I'm ill is that I've lost my appetite.

I took Builder to the doctor yesterday because he said his ear hurt.  He and I have been fighting this cold for over a week.  My ears seemed to clear up so I thought I'd watch him and see if he might recover without a doctor visit, too.  He seemed to be better, but then yesterday he had some pain in his ear again.  Thankfully we were able to get in to see the doctor and he does in fact have an ear infection.  We filled his prescription and he's on the mend.  Yay for medicine!!

While waiting at the pharmacy, I called my doctor but I had to wait to see him--no appointments open yesterday.  Ahh!!!!  So last night I'm trying to convince myself that it would be alright if I took some of Builder's amox. and then I could just switch out whatever I get from my doctor.  It was a sad state to be in.

I think I have at least half of my brain back this morning.  I see the doctor at 10:30!  I should have gone a week ago--stupid insurance.  I've become so paranoid about frivolous doctor visits that I'm going to drive us into an early grave.

Okay, I think that's enough drama for one morning.  Hopefully I can post a more positive blog soon.  We have had a great start to school.  We love all our activities and the kids are working hard and just great kids.

  • What's Happenin'

BTW that's the name of that old '70s show I was trying to think of the other day...

Anyway...back on track...here are the happenings around here...

    1)  Lovely chilly weather.  I don't like to be hot, although, the kids would like me to go swimming and I'd rather it be really hot out for that particular activity.

    2)  Planning, planning, planning.  I'm still not sure what we will use for SCIENCE resources.  We may just use library resources a lot.  In other areas, we're chugging right along.  I love our new spelling program, "Spelling Plus" by Susan C. Anthony.  Great pen name, huh?

    3)  Cleaning, purging, cleaning.  Both kids have completely sorted through their rooms and gotten rid of old junk.  It was a major undertaking!

    4)  Saying goodbye to paiting dreams.  I'd hoped to paint the woodwork upstairs, but alas, it is not meant to be.  I really would love to drag this house out of the 70's (despite the title of this blog entry).  Time is just running out.  I need to spend some time planning for CC.

    5)  Memories made over the last couple weeks.  We had a great time at our church picnic even though it rained like crazy.  We also had a blast at D's parents' lake house.  Friends from church drove down to Virginia to meet us there.  On top of all that, we saw family members we'd not seen for 15 years! at the H family reunion.

    6)  C went to the local indoor water park for a birthday party.  Wow, what a party--hours in a waterslide park, traditional pizza and cake and presents for an hour, and an hour in the arcade.

Okay, I've taken my first step toward getting back into blogging.  Thanks, Teacherperson!  It is amazing how rusty those writing gears can get.

About Me

  • I'm a Christian, homeschooling Mom who loves to be silly with my family. I have a son and a daughter who are lively and sweet. We've been homeschooling for three years and love it! My kids were in Foundations classes through Classical Conversations last year. I'll be tutoring this coming year and my kids will be in classes again.
